Some (not all) of recently laid quarry tiles have developed white staining the top of which when rubbed comes off as white powder. |

It sounds like effloresence, otherwise known as Mineral salts caused by either the use of a Sand and Cement based adhesive instead of a bagged adhesive (which has the salts taken out) or because the tiles have been laid onto a concrete floor without a Damp prrof course in place, if it is the former then this will disspate with the use of a product we call Grout clean up, rinse with water after wards and repeat if nessecary, The problem itself should disapear within 6 to 8 weeks. http://www.tiledoctor.co.uk/AcidCleaner.html
If it is the latter then this problem can be treated with the same Grout clean Up, but every winter the problem will come back due to the lack of a D.P.C Sheet.
