Asked by David Cockerill from Richmond, North Yorkshire: |
What would be the best products to clean & seal old fawn coloured quarry tiles (6"x6")in our local primary school toilets to stop them smelling of urine which seems to have penetrated the grout? |

Urine is otherwise known in the trade as Uric Acid, so you will need a Strong Alkaline cleaner to Neutralise the staining and smell, one of the best for this purpose is called Tile Doctor Pro-clean, it will disinfect the bacteria as well which causes most of the smell, add 400ml into a bucket of warm water and scrub the floor, then rinse with cold water and either Vac up or Mop it several times.

Did a job a couple of years ago with the same problem.
I also used toilet descaler to get rid of some bad build up of scale.
once everything was rinsed (a wet vac is essential on this job) I left it a couple of days to dry out and to make sure the smell had gone, I then laid 5 coats of seal and go.
Client was ecstatic because it saved a fortune having new flooring installed.
I now clean their carpets every year.
