salinity

Asked by Donna from Republic of Panama: We have a hotel in the Republic of Panama on the beach in an extreme environment. We have a lot of ceramic tiles that show saline residue. We have cleaned the tiles but in a couple days the stains return. It looks like we have to seal the tile as we would have to clean every couple days and this type of stain is not that easy to get off. What can you recommend to us thank you!!

TileProf says: Hi Donna, Thats the second e-mail we have had from Panama this year, we must be popular in your country. To answer your question, the sea is quite salty, and it sounds like it is ingressing into your Cermai Tile which isnt good, you will need to use an Alkaline cleaner to neutralise the Acid in the Salt, we cant deliver to Panama but I bet a local Builders merchant will have someting similar, Also I would try to seal a couple of these Tiles and see if that help, try a general stone sealer as it sounds like these Tiles are porous, but do a test area first as Ceramic Tiles usually dont take to a sealer as they are glazed and not Porous at all.
