Fire hearth tile cleaning

Hi
I would like to clean the hearth tiles of our fireplace.
They are very black for years of soot logs wax ash and coaldust.
They are also seemingly varnished and are some sort of terracotta or old English hearth tile.
It is about a 2 m² section of tiles and I appreciate any treatment may mean they need revarnishing or ceiling afterwards.
Please advise how and what I will need to complete the job.

Hi Bryn,
Try this link below, best to treat them as a quarry Tile, not sure how often the Fireplace is used but you may need to this sort of work once a year to keep it looking good.
