White blotches discolouring tiles

Asked by Pat Timbrell from st albans: White patches and smears have appearred over an area of tiles in the entrance hall. We think this is due to an acid cleaner having been applied in error. How can these tiles be cleaned and restored please?

TileProf says: Hi Pat, It could be any number of things, but white patches on Victorain could either by a damp problem, upsetting the Tiles and Sealer, something we call Eflloresence, this can be determined using a moisture meter, see link below. Or it could be as you say a solvent or heavy duty Chemical upsetting the Sealer, Victorain Floor Tiles are quite ressitant to most chemicals, but Sealers are not so I would say it is possibly the latter, if so read the detaisl about cleaning the Tiles on the other link below.
